Update on OHIP in Optometry

April 2022

Dear Patients of Pierce Family Vision

I thought it was time to give you all an update on optometry in Ontario and on our practice specifically. First of all, I would like to thank each and every one of you who supported our OHIP job action on September 1 2001, whether by signing our petitions or sending emails (sometimes many emails!) or even offering us kind words. On November 24 2001 optometrists in Ontario (including at our office) agreed to return to seeing OHIP patients (seniors, children and diabetics mainly) on the condition that the Ministry of Health actually meet with our association face to face to negotiate a long term solution to the optometry funding crisis. So this means that we are back to seeing all patients of all ages either OHIP or self paid.

The negotiations will likely not conclude for another year but a slight funding increase for seniors and children was implemented on April 1 as a sign of good faith for continuing the negotiations. This would not have happened without the support of our wonderful patients, so thank you again. We are cautiously optimistic that the issues will be worked out and hope we don’t have to ever do another job action.

This has also been a challenging 2 years dealing with COVID for all of us. Protecting our patients and staff has been a priority for us and very successful so far. We continue to require masking in office and our back door remains locked at present but we have unlocked our front door. We are also still largely requiring appointments for frame selections, adjustments and pick-ups for the present. Check out our new online store for eye drops, lid hygiene, contact lenses and more. There is even a fun virtual sunglass try-on feature! We are presently offering free delivery on the first contact lens order from our online store and free curbside pickup.

You will continue to see a mix of old and new faces at our clinic. Many of you are already enjoying the superlative care of my two associates Dr Manvit Singh and Dr Tristan Faria who are both KW natives and UW graduates. They are the future of Pierce Family Vision as I consider gradual retirement in the next 5 years. Thankfully Angie and Susan are still my super stars at the front desk although our newest star Sarah is helping Susan move gradually toward retirement. Tim has unfortunately moved back to the UK due to his partner’s job but we still keep in touch. Our friendly pre-test assistants Vaish and Terri-Lynn are doing a wonderful job in person and on the phone and pre-optometry student Parm and co-op student Jacob are great support staff. We will be welcoming back 3rd year optometry students Jerry and Emily this summer who will be joined by classmate Aisa who was an optician before she started optometry school. And Dr Pierce still pops in to help with admin a few days per week so say hello if you spot him!

Again thank you for supporting our independent local optometry practice. We want to continue to be here for you providing personal, friendly, high quality care for our valued patients, now and well into the future.
